Once again, at Christmas, it is my honour to join with Bishop Luc and offer you my warmest greetings for Christmas, and the New Year, 2011. May Christ, the prince of peace bring to you, your family, your home and your school the peace which ‘is beyond our understanding’.
Perhaps we should consider those words of the Blessing. If it were a peace which we could understand, we would all ‘capture’ it, and ‘preserve’ it. We would know how to create it, and we would know how to live it. The truth is much more complex: Peace is more than absence of war: that can be achieved in a totalitarian state. Some people think Peace is having worldly goods – but they fade and more is demanded.
The Peace which Christ brings is a love of neighbour, a personal contentment which allows us to value ourselves, and others, in the sight of God. It is a happiness that exists in the spirit, not material possessions. It is a richness and wealth brought by human relationships. It is Love.
Catholic Teachers have that Love in abundance –it is a gift from God, like Faith, and we should accept it joyfully, so that our pupils may see in each one of us, the face of God.
May the Peace and Love of Christ reign in your hearts.
